Ozlo, the pioneering sleep earbuds startup founded by former Bose engineers, has officially launched its highly anticipated next-generation device, the Sleepbuds 2. Unveiled on Tuesday, this updated version of its original product directly addresses critical areas of improvement identified from user feedback and technological advancements, focusing on significantly enhanced battery life, more robust connectivity, and superior sound quality. The new Sleepbuds 2 will retail for $279, representing a $30 increase from the original Sleepbuds’ recent $249 price point, though the initial model carried an MSRP of $349.
This launch marks Ozlo’s first substantial update since the debut of its initial device and underscores the company’s strategic evolution. What began as a continuation of Bose’s legacy in the sleep-aid category has now blossomed into Ozlo’s distinct and comprehensive sleep platform, demonstrating a clear vision for holistic sleep improvement beyond just noise masking.
The journey of Ozlo began following Bose’s withdrawal from the sleep earbud market. Sensing an unfulfilled demand and recognizing the potential of the underlying technology, Ozlo’s co-founders – N.B. Patil, Brian Mulcahey, and Charlie Taylor – all veterans of Bose who were intimately involved with the original Sleepbuds program, took action. They successfully acquired and licensed the foundational Sleepbuds research and intellectual property (IP) for their new venture, Ozlo. This strategic move meant that Ozlo’s inaugural product, launched in late 2024, was not merely inspired by Bose but was, in essence, a refined continuation of those earlier efforts, aiming to perfect the concept of an in-ear sleep aid.

The original Ozlo Sleepbuds quickly garnered a dedicated following, accumulating over 200,000 customers. Their design philosophy prioritized comfort and discretion, making them notably smaller and more low-profile than conventional earbuds like AirPods. This ergonomic design proved particularly beneficial for users who sleep on their side, preventing discomfort often associated with bulkier in-ear devices. Beyond physical comfort, the original Sleepbuds offered a suite of features designed to improve sleep quality, including built-in sleep sounds, Bluetooth streaming capabilities, passive noise blocking, an integrated in-ear alarm, and fundamental sleep tracking functionalities.
With the Sleepbuds 2, Ozlo has meticulously engineered a range of significant enhancements that directly address key user needs and common pain points. Most notably, the battery life has been extended to an impressive 14 hours, a substantial upgrade from the approximately 10 hours offered by the first generation. This improvement ensures that the earbuds can comfortably last through a full night’s sleep and beyond, accommodating varying sleep patterns and durations. Furthermore, the accompanying charging case has also seen an upgrade, now capable of storing enough power to provide two to three full nights of use on a single charge. A thoughtful addition to the charging case is a new physical button, which allows users to conveniently play a sleep sound or snooze their alarm without needing to reach for their smartphone, enhancing the overall user experience and minimizing interaction with bright screens before bed.
One of the primary focuses for improvement in the Sleepbuds 2 was Bluetooth connectivity, an area where the original model occasionally experienced flakiness, despite subsequent software updates that improved performance. Ozlo asserts that the Sleepbuds 2 deliver a longer Bluetooth range, a more reliable and stable connection, and dedicated pairing controls for faster and more intuitive setup. These crucial connectivity enhancements are the result of a complete redesign of the internal antenna and extender components, as detailed by Ozlo.
The audio system within the Sleepbuds 2 has also undergone a significant overhaul. It now features a built-in amplifier, which is crucial for achieving better sound masking – the ability to effectively block out disruptive external noises by playing soothing sounds. This also contributes to an overall improved sound quality, making the integrated sleep sounds and streamed audio more immersive and effective. A new personalized sound tuning feature further elevates the audio experience, allowing users to optimize sound profiles for specific use cases. These include dedicated modes such as Spoken Word for listening to audiobooks or podcasts, an Airplane mode designed to combat cabin noise, a Focus mode for concentration, and a balanced mode for general listening.

Another innovative feature introduced in the Sleepbuds 2 is the "Sleep Shield." This function provides an additional layer of digital disconnection by automatically blocking incoming calls, alerts, notifications, and Bluetooth audio streaming during sleep periods. This is particularly useful for users who might not consistently enable their phone’s built-in sleep focus mode, ensuring an uninterrupted and peaceful night.
Ozlo has also expanded its sleep insights capabilities, offering users more granular details about their sleep patterns. The Sleepbuds 2 incorporate advanced biometrics that monitor crucial physiological indicators such as breathing and movement throughout the night. Complementing this, the charging case is equipped with sensors that actively monitor ambient room conditions, including sound levels, light exposure, and temperature. By correlating these environmental factors with the user’s biometric data, the Sleepbuds 2 can provide comprehensive insights, helping wearers identify which sleep environments are most conducive to deeper, more restorative sleep, thereby facilitating long-term sleep improvement.
The company’s ambition to become a broader platform for sleep data was previously outlined during an interview with TechCrunch at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. This vision includes leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret users’ complex sleep patterns more effectively and to provide personalized recommendations. Looking ahead, Ozlo is also developing an AI-powered "sleep buddy," an interactive conversational agent designed to allow users to chat about their sleep data and receive tailored advice.
To celebrate the launch of the Sleepbuds 2, Ozlo is offering a special limited-time promotion, including a complimentary sleep mask and travel case with each purchase. The $279 Sleepbuds 2 package itself comes complete with four pairs of silicone ear tips in various sizes to ensure a perfect fit, the advanced charging case, and a USB-C cable for convenient charging.

From a personal perspective, the effectiveness of Ozlo’s sleep technology is evident. As an owner of the original Ozlo Sleepbuds, this reporter found them to be an exceptionally effective tool for blocking out disruptive noise and for streaming soothing sounds or music. Their comfortable, low-profile design made them far superior to sleeping with standard AirPods, and they consistently remained in place throughout the night. While the built-in sounds offered by Ozlo were functional, a personal preference emerged for streaming content from the Calm app. This preference is, notably, shared by many, as evidenced by Ozlo’s partnership with Calm last year, which resulted in a co-branded charging case that included a year’s subscription to Calm’s extensive library of sleep sounds, stories, and other sleep-enhancing experiences. The prospect of trying the new Sleepbuds 2 is compelling, especially to assess whether the promised improvements warrant an upgrade for existing Sleepbuds owners.
