eBay is set to significantly expand its presence in the burgeoning recommerce fashion market with the finalized acquisition of Depop, a popular peer-to-peer circular fashion marketplace. The deal, valued at $1.2 billion, was officially cleared by UK regulators, paving the way for its completion on July 30, 2026. This strategic move underscores eBay’s commitment to its "Focus Category" strategy, which prioritizes high-growth areas such as fashion, luxury, collectibles, and sneakers.
The acquisition represents a substantial investment for eBay, particularly when contrasted with Etsy’s initial purchase of Depop. Etsy acquired Depop five years prior for $1.625 billion. The question now arises as to how eBay plans to leverage Depop to create synergies that reportedly eluded Etsy, which also divested its music-gear marketplace, Reverb, last year. eBay’s aspirations may be closely tied to the potential of its eBay Live platform. This feature allows sellers to host live-streamed shopping events, showcasing products within eBay’s core focus categories, including fashion and apparel.
Depop has demonstrated considerable growth and market penetration. In 2025, the platform generated $1 billion in annual gross merchandise sales. This figure, while substantial, is a fraction of eBay’s established fashion category, which boasts over $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume. According to Depop’s own mission statement, it operates as a "peer-to-peer circular fashion marketplace where anyone can buy, sell and discover secondhand fashion." The company’s stated objective is to "make fashion circular by making secondhand as exciting and rewarding as buying new."

When Etsy acquired Depop in 2021, the marketplace reported a robust user base. At that time, Depop had approximately 4 million active buyers and 2 million active sellers, with a total of 30 million registered users spread across nearly 150 countries. The platform has continued to expand its reach and appeal. Current data indicates that Depop now boasts approximately 56.3 million registered users. Within this extensive network, 3 million users are active sellers, and 7 million are active buyers. A significant demographic insight is that 90% of Depop’s active buyers are under the age of 34, highlighting its strong appeal to a younger, fashion-conscious consumer base.
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone articulated the strategic rationale behind the acquisition in February. He emphasized how Depop aligns with eBay’s Focus Category strategy and how the e-commerce giant’s scale, complementary offerings, and operational capabilities will benefit the acquired platform. Iannone stated, "This acquisition presents an opportunity to advance one of our newest and fastest-growing Focus Categories with a marketplace that complements our existing presence, and enables us to reach a younger demographic across the expanding recommerce landscape. We’re excited to welcome the Depop team to eBay, and look forward to building on what makes them unique – their brand, culture and community – to deliver compelling benefits to buyers and sellers."
This move into the fashion recommerce sector follows a similar strategic acquisition in another of eBay’s key focus areas. In 2024, eBay made a significant acquisition in the collectibles market by purchasing Goldin Auctions. This acquisition has since been integrated to encourage collectors to link their eBay accounts with Goldin, further solidifying eBay’s position in that segment. The Depop acquisition signals a similar intent to consolidate and strengthen its offering within the fashion vertical.
Both eBay and Etsy are scheduled to release their second-quarter earnings reports. Etsy will release its report on August 5, with a conference call for investors planned for the following morning. This financial reporting will likely provide further insights into the performance of both companies and the ongoing integration of the Depop acquisition. The strategic alignment of Depop with eBay’s existing fashion business, coupled with the platform’s strong appeal to younger consumers and its commitment to circular fashion, positions eBay for significant growth in the rapidly evolving recommerce landscape. The company’s investment in live shopping features and its proven track record with other focus categories suggest a deliberate and well-planned strategy to maximize the value of this substantial acquisition. The integration of Depop is expected to enhance eBay’s ability to cater to a broader spectrum of fashion consumers, from vintage and pre-owned enthusiasts to those seeking the latest trends in sustainable fashion.
