eBay is set to officially acquire Depop, the popular peer-to-peer fashion marketplace, for $1.2 billion from Etsy. The landmark deal, initially announced in February, has now received clearance from UK regulators, paving the way for its anticipated closure on July 30, 2026. This strategic acquisition signifies eBay’s commitment to significantly expanding its presence in the burgeoning recommerce sector and appealing to a younger, fashion-conscious demographic.
The acquisition marks a significant move for eBay as it continues to execute its "Focus Category" strategy, which prioritizes growth in key areas such as Collectibles, Luxury, Sneakers, and Apparel. Depop, with its strong appeal to Gen Z and Millennials, is expected to be a powerful addition to eBay’s fashion vertical, which already generates over $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume. In contrast, Depop reported $1 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2025.
Etsy had originally purchased Depop for $1.625 billion five years prior. The fact that eBay is acquiring Depop for a lower valuation has led to discussions among sellers about how eBay plans to unlock synergies that may have eluded Etsy. eBay’s leadership appears to be pinning its hopes on initiatives like eBay Live, a platform that enables sellers to host livestream shopping events. This feature is particularly relevant for products within eBay’s designated focus categories, including fashion items.
Depop’s mission, as stated on its website, is to "make fashion circular by making secondhand as exciting and rewarding as buying new." The platform functions as a peer-to-peer circular fashion marketplace, facilitating the buying, selling, and discovery of pre-owned fashion items. This ethos aligns closely with the growing consumer demand for sustainable and ethical shopping options.

When Etsy acquired Depop in 2021, the platform boasted approximately 4 million active buyers and 2 million active sellers, with a total of 30 million registered users spread across nearly 150 countries. The recent data indicates substantial growth for Depop. Currently, the marketplace has around 56.3 million registered users, including 3 million active sellers and 7 million active buyers. A striking statistic is that 90% of Depop’s active buyers are under the age of 34, highlighting its significant reach within the younger consumer segment.
In February, eBay CEO Jamie Iannone articulated the strategic rationale behind the acquisition, emphasizing how Depop would benefit from eBay’s extensive scale, complementary offerings, and robust operational capabilities. He stated, "This acquisition presents an opportunity to advance one of our newest and fastest-growing Focus Categories with a marketplace that complements our existing presence, and enables us to reach a younger demographic across the expanding recommerce landscape. We’re excited to welcome the Depop team to eBay, and look forward to building on what makes them unique – their brand, culture and community – to deliver compelling benefits to buyers and sellers."
This move by eBay to strengthen its fashion category follows a similar strategic acquisition in another of its focus areas. In 2024, eBay acquired Goldin Auctions, a prominent collectibles marketplace, demonstrating a pattern of consolidating its position in key growth sectors. This acquisition has since encouraged collectors to link their eBay accounts with Goldin, further integrating these specialized markets.
The financial performance of both eBay and Etsy will be closely scrutinized in their upcoming second-quarter earnings reports. Etsy is scheduled to release its results on August 5, with its conference call with investors delayed until the following morning. eBay’s second-quarter earnings are also expected on August 5.
The acquisition of Depop by eBay represents a significant development in the e-commerce landscape, particularly within the fashion and recommerce sectors. By integrating Depop’s vibrant community and its appeal to younger consumers with eBay’s vast infrastructure and market reach, eBay aims to capture a larger share of the rapidly expanding secondhand fashion market. The success of this integration will hinge on eBay’s ability to preserve Depop’s unique brand identity and community ethos while leveraging its own operational strengths to drive further growth and profitability. The company’s focus on livestream shopping through eBay Live also suggests a strategy to enhance engagement and create a more dynamic shopping experience, potentially drawing inspiration from the interactive nature of platforms popular with younger demographics. The long-term implications of this multi-billion dollar acquisition will be a key point of interest for investors, sellers, and consumers alike in the coming years.
