Warren Buffett Addresses Bill Gates’ Association with Jeffrey Epstein, Shifts Major Charitable Donations to Family Foundations

Warren Buffett, the esteemed chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has publicly addressed his decision to exclude the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from his substantial annual charitable donations, citing Bill Gates’ association with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as a "distasteful" factor. In a candid interview with CNBC’s Becky Quick, Buffett explained his reasoning, emphasizing that while he acknowledges Gates’ mistakes and his own past errors in judgment regarding friendships and hiring, he found nothing in the publicly available information about Gates and Epstein’s relationship that he "could picture myself doing."

Buffett, who has maintained a friendship with Gates for over three decades, revealed that he undertook a thorough review of the information surrounding Gates’ ties to Epstein before making the significant adjustment to his philanthropic strategy. This year, Buffett directed all of his annual donations to four foundations closely linked to his family. This marks a notable departure from previous years, during which the Gates Foundation was consistently the largest beneficiary of his annual Berkshire Hathaway stock donations. Since 2006, Buffett has contributed more than $47 billion worth of Berkshire stock to the foundation established by Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his former wife, Melinda Gates.

Despite this shift in his donation strategy, Buffett stated that his relationship with Bill Gates remains intact. He shared that they recently spent several hours together in Omaha, with Gates visiting just three weeks prior to the interview. Buffett indicated that Gates intends to maintain contact and has already proposed another meeting, suggesting that their personal bond remains strong.

In response to Buffett’s comments, Bill Gates issued a statement to CNBC, expressing his profound gratitude for Buffett’s "unprecedented" support of his foundation. Gates highlighted the significant impact of these donations, stating they have been instrumental in saving millions of lives. He conveyed his immeasurable appreciation for Warren Buffett and expressed his hope for many more shared moments in the future.

The shift in Buffett’s charitable giving strategy is rooted in his reevaluation of his estate plan and a desire to place greater responsibility on his three children. He explained that he has been gradually preparing them for this role over the past decades. Buffett articulated that while he believed his decision to give a significant amount of money to the Gates Foundation was sound at the time, he did not feel his children were adequately prepared to manage and distribute vast sums of money. He now intends to entrust them with the responsibility of ensuring these funds are used effectively and wisely.

Buffett reiterated his commitment to disbursing all of his Berkshire Hathaway shares, a process he aims to complete within approximately eight years. He noted that this timeline is influenced by the fact that his children are "unfortunately growing older."

This year’s distribution of shares reflects this new direction. The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named in honor of Buffett’s late first wife, will receive nine million Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock, valued at approximately $4.5 billion. Concurrently, the three foundations managed by his children will each receive one million Class B shares, each worth just under $500 million. These foundations include the Sherwood Foundation, led by Susie Buffett; the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, headed by Howard G. Buffett; and the NoVo Foundation, established by Peter Buffett.

In a personal update, Buffett also revealed that he recently underwent surgery following a leg fracture sustained several weeks ago. He reported that he is recovering well from the procedure.
