Gemini 3.5 Flash is positioned as the workhorse behind many of this year’s AI announcements. Google claims it significantly outperforms its previous frontier model, Gemini 3.1 Pro, across nearly all benchmarks, while running an impressive four times faster in output tokens per second compared to other comparable frontier models. Pichai lauded its performance, describing it as being "in a league of its own in the top right quadrant" of the Artificial Analysis index, which plots intelligence against speed. This signifies that Gemini 3.5 Flash delivers near-frontier quality AI capabilities with dramatically lower latency.

This exceptional speed is critically important for search. A conversational AI search experience that feels sluggish would be untenable for a product that handles billions of queries daily. These advanced capabilities will become available in the coming months, initially for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.

The redesign also paves the way for what Google calls "information agents" – autonomous AI agents that users can configure directly within search to continuously monitor the web 24/7 for specific conditions and deliver synthesized updates when those conditions are met. For instance, a user could set up an agent to track intricate market movements within a particular economic sector, defining specific parameters. The agent would then formulate a monitoring plan, tap into real-time financial data, and proactively notify the user when the specified conditions are met, complete with relevant links and contextual information for further research. Information agents will launch first for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer.

These agents are integral to a much larger strategic pivot articulated by Google throughout the briefing: a comprehensive commitment to AI systems that not only answer questions but proactively take actions on users’ behalf. Beyond search, Google introduced Gemini Spark, a 24/7 personal AI agent designed to run on dedicated virtual machines in Google Cloud. It also unveiled the Universal Cart, an intelligent, cross-merchant shopping cart solution, and announced the Agent Payments Protocol, a secure framework for agents to facilitate purchases. Furthermore, Google expanded its Antigravity developer platform into a full-fledged ecosystem for building autonomous AI agents, signifying a deep investment in this proactive AI paradigm.
