eBay’s acquisition of Depop has officially concluded, with the e-commerce giant paying Etsy $1.4 billion to secure the popular fashion resale marketplace. A key point for sellers to note is eBay’s commitment to operating Depop as a complementary business, retaining its distinct brand, platform, customer experience, and unique culture. This strategic move aims to leverage Depop’s strong appeal to younger demographics while integrating it with eBay’s extensive global reach and robust capabilities.
In a July 30, 2026 announcement, eBay expressed its strategic vision for the integration: "By combining Depop’s category leadership with eBay’s global scale and capabilities – including shipping, personalization, compliance, and trusted services – we will enhance the buyer and seller experience and accelerate growth." eBay characterized Depop as a "consumer to consumer fashion marketplace with a highly-engaged Gen Z and Millennial customer base." The acquisition is seen as a significant step in bolstering eBay’s presence in the fashion sector, an area that already generates over $10 billion in annual Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) for the company.
The company further elaborated on the synergistic potential: "With millions of users buying and selling fashion items, Depop has built one of the most vibrant and fastest-growing communities in fashion resale and cultivated a distinct, community-driven platform rooted in discovery, creativity, and peer-to-peer connection. Its highly engaged customer base and accessibly priced fashion inventory make Depop a natural complement to eBay’s leading proposition in C2C commerce. eBay intends to support Depop’s continued growth while preserving the elements that make the marketplace unique to accelerate the future of circular fashion."
Depop was previously acquired by Etsy in 2022 for $1.625 billion. During its tenure under Etsy, Kruti Patel Goyal, a long-time Etsy executive, served as Depop CEO. Her tenure at the helm of Depop was marked by efforts to strengthen its core marketplace proposition and a focus on product development and marketing strategies designed to differentiate the company in the increasingly competitive secondhand market. According to her bio on Etsy, these initiatives contributed to accelerated gross merchandise sales and established Depop as the fastest-growing online apparel resale marketplace in the United States. Goyal transitioned back to Etsy in December 2024, assuming the role of President, and subsequently replaced former Etsy CEO Josh Silverman on January 1, 2026.
Etsy’s press release regarding the sale stated that eBay paid approximately $1.4 billion in cash for Depop. This figure comprises the initial purchase price of $1.2 billion, plus $200 million in net purchase price adjustments and interest, with further post-closing adjustments anticipated. Etsy indicated that the proceeds from the sale would be utilized in line with their previously stated plans, which included accelerating their share repurchase program.

In a statement released on Thursday, Kruti Patel Goyal, now President of Etsy, expressed optimism for both companies: "We are excited for what’s next for both Etsy and Depop. This transaction allows us to move forward with a clear focus on building the best marketplace for Etsy’s buyers and sellers, and is a strong outcome for our shareholders. We’re proud of what the Depop team has built – a truly differentiated brand with a passionate community – and we wish them continued success as part of eBay."
Depop CEO Peter Semple also shared his perspective on LinkedIn on Thursday, marking the official transition: "Today marks the beginning of an incredible new chapter for Depop. Joining eBay means we can move even faster toward a future where resale is the natural way to shop for fashion, while continuing to build on what makes the Depop community and experience so special. I’m exceptionally proud of what our team has built, grateful to everyone who’s been part of our journey so far – including our colleagues at Etsy. I’m very, very excited for what we’ll achieve together next."
Both eBay and Etsy are scheduled to release their second-quarter earnings reports after market close on Wednesday. eBay will host its Q2 earnings call on Wednesday, while Etsy will present its results to analysts on Thursday morning.
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone reiterated the company’s strategic intent in Thursday’s announcement, emphasizing the goal of preserving the Depop brand, community, and product experience. He further stated that eBay would be exploring synergies with Depop that could "supercharge our combined growth potential."
For sellers operating on both eBay and the newly acquired Depop, the forthcoming integration presents both opportunities and potential challenges. The specific changes eBay implements to foster synergies could significantly impact sellers’ reach and sales performance. While the long-term effects are yet to be determined, the integration aims to enhance the overall e-commerce landscape for fashion resale.
