The cryptocurrency exchange landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by intensifying competition from both established traditional brokerage firms and agile decentralized exchanges (DEXs). This competitive pressure is compelling crypto exchanges to broaden their offerings beyond traditional digital assets, venturing into the burgeoning market of tokenized traditional assets, including stocks, commodities, and precious metals, according to a recent study by crypto data aggregator CoinGecko.
A comprehensive analysis released by CoinGecko on Wednesday revealed a substantial surge in the market capitalization of tokenized traditional assets. This diverse category encompasses precious metals, U.S. equities, commodities, global indices, and foreign exchange (forex) markets. The study indicates that the market capitalization of these tokenized assets grew from $1.4 billion in January 2025 to an impressive $6.6 billion by June 2026. The data for this analysis was drawn from activity observed across prominent crypto exchanges, including Binance, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, Gate, and MEXC.
The initial phase of growth in this emerging market was primarily propelled by the tokenization of precious metals. However, this segment soon expanded to include tokenized U.S. equities. By the middle of 2026, the report highlights a notable shift, with tokenized U.S. stock perpetual futures surpassing precious metals in both trading volume and open interest. This ascendancy was reportedly fueled by significant investor interest, particularly in semiconductor stocks, and anticipation surrounding upcoming initial public offerings (IPOs).
The report’s accompanying visual, depicting tokenized traditional assets on crypto exchanges, illustrates a nearly fivefold growth over an 18-month period, with precious metals spearheading the early gains. This trend underscores a strategic pivot by crypto platforms to cater to a wider investor base by offering exposure to asset classes previously confined to traditional financial markets.
A key observation from the CoinGecko study is the overwhelming dominance of perpetual futures in trading activity within the tokenized traditional asset space. Spot markets, in contrast, remain comparatively smaller. The report attributes this disparity to several factors. Primarily, traders often exhibit a preference for leveraged products, which are more readily available and accessible through perpetual futures contracts. Furthermore, exchanges can facilitate the listing of perpetual contracts without the complex operational requirements of issuing or holding custody of the underlying tokenized assets themselves, streamlining the listing process.
This strategic expansion by centralized crypto exchanges is part of a broader effort to diversify revenue streams and attract and retain users in an increasingly crowded digital asset ecosystem. CoinGecko’s analysis points to the intensifying competition on multiple fronts. Decentralized exchanges have been steadily eroding the market share of centralized platforms, offering alternative trading environments. Simultaneously, traditional brokerage firms are actively expanding their digital asset offerings, blurring the lines between conventional finance and the cryptocurrency world.

Illustrative of this trend is the aggressive expansion of digital asset offerings by established brokerages like Robinhood. This move signifies a growing convergence between traditional finance and digital asset platforms, as these incumbent players seek to leverage the growing investor interest in cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. The increasing overlap underscores the evolving nature of financial services, where traditional intermediaries are embracing digital innovation.
Institutional Demand Fuels Tokenization Push
Beyond the strategic maneuvers of crypto exchanges, a significant driver behind the tokenization of traditional assets is the escalating institutional demand. Reports from major financial institutions underscore the transformative potential of this trend. A June report by Standard Chartered projected that the tokenization of assets could significantly expand the decentralized finance (DeFi) market, potentially reaching $2.7 trillion by 2030. This growth is anticipated to be driven by the increasing adoption of real-world assets onto blockchain infrastructure.
In a separate analysis, Bernstein analysts estimated that the broader tokenization market could achieve a valuation of up to $4 trillion by the end of the decade. This optimistic outlook is predicated on the increasing embrace of blockchain-based assets by financial institutions globally. As more traditional financial players recognize the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility offered by tokenized assets, the market is poised for exponential growth.
The convergence between crypto exchanges and traditional brokerages, as highlighted by CoinGecko, mirrors the broader institutional adoption of tokenization. Both phenomena point to a rapid blurring of the lines between traditional finance and blockchain infrastructure. This integration is not merely theoretical; concrete partnerships and initiatives are actively shaping this evolving landscape.
As recently reported, BitGo, a prominent digital asset custodian, has partnered with OTC Markets Group. This collaboration aims to enhance access to tokenized securities for a wide network of over 150 broker-dealers, further facilitating institutional participation. In a parallel development, Tradable has joined forces with the Stellar network to bring up to $1 billion in private credit assets onto the blockchain. These initiatives exemplify how a diverse range of entities, including banks, brokerages, and crypto firms, are increasingly building on shared blockchain infrastructure, signaling a unified approach to the future of financial markets.
The growing presence of tokenized traditional assets on crypto exchanges, driven by both competitive pressures and robust institutional demand, marks a significant evolution in the financial services industry. This trend signifies a deeper integration of blockchain technology into mainstream finance, promising greater accessibility, efficiency, and innovation across a wide spectrum of asset classes.
