Etsy’s UK Search Results Now Display Price Plus Shipping, Sparking Seller Concerns Amidst Regulatory Changes

Etsy has implemented a significant change in its UK search results, now displaying the combined price of items and their associated shipping costs upfront. This alteration, which sellers began noticing around February 25th, has been officially confirmed by Etsy as a measure to comply with the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC Act). While Etsy states the total amount a buyer pays remains unchanged, the new presentation has generated considerable concern among sellers, particularly those dealing with low-priced items or multi-item purchases, who fear it may deter potential customers.

The issue first came to light on February 18th when a seller reported to Ecommercebytes that Etsy was displaying listings with the "postage included" price in search results. However, upon clicking through to an individual item page, the displayed cost was presented as the original item price minus the postage, a discrepancy that was also being carried through to the shopping cart. This inconsistency and the upfront inclusion of shipping costs have been identified as major challenges by some sellers.

A detailed discussion on Reddit, initiated on February 20th, highlighted the specific problems faced by sellers. One seller, who specializes in stickers, expressed dismay at how their items now appear. "I sell stickers, so that paired with the delivery is now having all me stickers seems like they’re 5.94 each, which I feel might deter customers, because it’s not even like it has a banner that now states ‘free delivery’," they explained. The seller also raised concerns about the potential impact on international sales, where the bundled price might appear significantly higher for a single sticker sheet. A critical point of confusion for this seller was the apparent discrepancy in the shopping cart, where adding multiple items did not automatically adjust the displayed price of subsequent items to their original price, leading the buyer to believe they were still paying the bundled price for each. This prompted the seller to question whether to adjust their base prices to incorporate shipping and qualify for a "free delivery" banner, or to leave the pricing as is, acknowledging the change felt "flawed."

Another Etsy seller echoed these concerns, emphasizing the negative impact on customers interested in purchasing multiple items. They provided an example: if a potential buyer was interested in four listings each priced at £20, they would now see these items as costing £23 each (with £3 representing the postage cost). This would lead the buyer to believe the total cost for four items would be £92. However, in reality, the buyer would only pay postage once for the combined order, making the actual total £83. The seller stressed that this presentation is "totally misleading" and could significantly discourage multi-item purchases.

Etsy Displays Price Plus Shipping in UK Search Results

In its official announcement on February 25th, Etsy clarified the rationale behind the change. The platform stated that the update is a direct response to the UK’s Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC Act). This legislation mandates that businesses clearly present the total price a UK customer must pay from the outset of the purchase journey, prohibiting the introduction of mandatory costs like shipping or other required fees later in the process.

Etsy further elaborated on its implementation strategy: "To help Etsy sellers comply with the DMCC Act – and to provide greater price transparency to buyers – Etsy will begin displaying a combined total price that includes the item price and VAT-inclusive shipping price to UK buyers. This helps ensure they don’t encounter unexpected, non-optional charges once they reach checkout." The platform assured buyers that this total price would be visible throughout their shopping experience, including when viewing individual listings. While acknowledging that the final total might occasionally update at checkout due to changes in delivery details or combined shipping qualifications, Etsy guaranteed that buyers would always see the adjusted final price before completing a purchase.

The platform also recognized the significant nature of this change and its potential to make listing prices appear higher at first glance. "We understand this is a meaningful change and that it can make a listing’s price look higher at first glance. We appreciate your partnership as we implement this required update," Etsy communicated to its sellers. The company pledged to closely monitor seller feedback as they continue to refine this new pricing display. For further details, sellers were directed to a dedicated article in Etsy’s Help Center.

Ecommerce consultant Cindy Baldassi had alerted her Patreon readers to this impending change on February 17th, prior to Etsy’s official announcement. She later updated her post following Etsy’s confirmation of the new pricing display in UK search results. The implications of this regulatory-driven shift are still being assessed by sellers, with ongoing discussions and feedback likely to shape how Etsy further optimizes this experience.
