EBay’s Auto Price Reduction Feature Mysteriously Vanishes, Leaving Sellers Reeling

A popular and practical tool for eBay sellers, the Auto Price Reduction feature, abruptly disappeared from the platform on Tuesday, sparking confusion and frustration among users. This feature allowed sellers to automatically decrease the prices of their fixed-price listings over time, a strategy crucial for remaining competitive and moving single-quantity inventory. The sudden removal has led to widespread speculation and a flurry of inquiries on industry discussion boards and directly to EcommerceBytes, as sellers seek an explanation for the feature’s disappearance.

The Auto Price Reduction tool had a somewhat clandestine inception. It first gained attention in July when some sellers noticed its presence without any prior announcement, quickly adopting it into their sales strategies. eBay eventually acknowledged the feature in its October Seller Update, stating, "Our Auto Price Reduction feature automatically reduces prices for unsold listings to reach more buyers and help them sell." However, even then, the announcement lacked detailed information, with no "read more" option to provide further clarity.

This ambiguity resurfaced with the feature’s sudden vanishing act on Tuesday. In response to seller inquiries on eBay’s discussion boards, an eBay seller with "mentor" status stated, "That feature has been discontinued. Some features on eBay come and go based on their success, failure or lack of use. Sorry that happened but one method to pricing is set your lowest price on your item(s) that you will sell for and cover eBay fees, your cost and most importantly, YOUR profit margin." This response, however, did not offer concrete confirmation from eBay itself, leaving sellers to question whether the mentor was privy to insider information or merely speculating. Efforts to solicit official confirmation from eBay moderators were met with silence, perpetuating the uncertainty about whether the disappearance was an intentional platform change or a technical glitch.

An EcommerceBytes reader, who first reported the issue on Thursday, firmly believed the removal was a deliberate decision. This seller theorized that eBay might be phasing out user-friendly, free automation tools in favor of promoting its paid promotional services. The reader expressed concern that "Abruptly eliminating features sellers have already adopted undermines trust and highlights a growing pattern: useful seller tools are temporary, while monetized solutions are permanent."

Adding to the confusion, as of Sunday, eBay’s official help pages still referenced the Auto Price Reduction feature. The "Pricing items" help page described the functionality, stating, "In the Pricing section of the quick listing tool, you can use the Auto price reduction option. You just have to set an amount to automatically lower the item price by every 3 days, as well as a minimum price you’re willing to reduce the item to." This contradictory information further fueled seller anxiety and doubt.

eBay Disappears the Auto Price-Reduction Feature

The disappearance of the Auto Price Reduction feature was also a hot topic on Reddit, with a thread titled, "Did eBay end the Automatic Price Reduction feature?" appearing on Tuesday. The original poster shared that the feature had been instrumental in driving sales and traffic to their eBay listings. They reported, "I can’t seem to find confirmation anywhere online, but none of my 200+ current listings seem to have the feature anymore, and new listings don’t have that field available to enable this. I really enjoyed using this because it was basically a set it and forget it mode to drop prices by a set amount every 3 days which was bringing in a lot of sales and traffic."

Later in the Reddit thread, the original poster provided an update after speaking with an eBay representative. The eBay rep allegedly stated that the feature had not been discontinued and that its absence was a "site wide issue" that had been "reported by many sellers." The representative claimed to have added the user’s account to a list for restoration efforts. However, the seller expressed reservations, acknowledging that "eBay phone reps are known to pass on incorrect information," leaving them uncertain about what to believe. They reiterated their hope for a resolution, emphasizing that the feature was central to their listing and discounting strategy for over 200 active listings.

Five days after the initial reports, sellers continued to lack access to the Auto Price Reduction feature, with no definitive explanation or resolution from eBay.

Update 2/11/2026: In an email to EcommerceBytes, eBay mentor mr_lincoln provided updated information regarding the Auto Price Reduction (APR) feature, offering a clarification to his previous post on the eBay boards. He stated that he could not edit his original post due to eBay’s 24-hour editing limit. The confirmed facts, as provided by eBay, are as follows:

  • APR is available on the Quick Listing Tool. Mr. lincoln noted that he does not personally use this listing tool.
  • APR is not available on the Advanced listing tool accessible through Seller Hub. This is the listing tool Mr. lincoln uses, which explains the accuracy of the screenshot provided earlier in the discussion.
  • The availability of the feature on the eBay mobile app was not mentioned.

Based on this clarification, mr_lincoln explained that the discrepancy in sellers’ ability to access the feature is due to the different listing tools they utilize. He concluded by stating that he would post any further confirmed information from eBay and expressed his thanks for sellers’ patience and understanding. This update indicates that the disappearance of the feature was not a site-wide outage but rather a platform-specific availability issue tied to the listing tools used by sellers.
